Rancher 420AT...oil is up to the top of the fill hole
#11
I can't see the point in new oil again, it may be worth checking the filter is in right. I haven't had the pleasure of working on one, as we sold the first AT about a month ago and it hasn't come in for service yet. How do you like the Auto change? I didn't care for it, and suspect I would drive it in ESP if I were using it myself.

merryman, like you I do not care for the autoshift all that much, on flat surfaces like fire roads it is okay but seems to be in one gear too high (probably for gas milage). I just keep it in ESP and shift with my thumb. Wished the Rancher came IRS with Power Steering and foot shift. However that combo did not exist when I bought my Rancher.
Fasteratv, do you or anyone here know where I can locate the crack case vent to check
I let the ATV sit overnight and the oil level dropped back down from the top of the fill hole and once again was showing on the dip stick as should be expected.

So wanted to follow up with my oil fill issue: Recall, I was not getting any oil on the dipstick yet the oil level was to the top of the fill hole after doing an oil change. The short answer is there is nothing wrong with my ATV. On the Rancher420AT there is a dry sump oil pump and it takes hours not minutes for the oil to drain back into the lower crank case to get an accurate measurement on the dipstick. The Service Manual states to run the ATV for 5-10 minutes after an oil change then let it set for 2-3 minutes before checking the oil level, but it should be more like 2-3 hours. Just for the heck of it, on two other Rancher420AT's I checked the oil only after 2-3 minutes of rest and to my surprise and relief no oil was on the dipstick yet the oil was to the top of the fill hole. Anyway this past weekend I said screw it and rode about 130 miles with no issues. Figured if the engine had not been getting oil or not circulating correctly I would have had a problem. So my advice to others who have the same problem (no oil on dip stick but plenty oil in the fill side after an oil change) is that its not an issue. I stressed so much over this and though for sure I messed up the oil change and ruined my ATV. Turns out all is fine.

Same instructions on Polaris machines.Crank them up until warm, kill the engine and let sit for 2-3 minutes. Then check oil level.Odd ball machines if it takes hours for oil to settle to get an accurate reading..

thanks for this I just picked up my bike and had the same issue and did not know what to do. Not a great way to know how much oil is in your bike.
