400ex decompression

Default 400ex decompression
My 400ex was burning oil, so I rebuilt it. When I Put it back together, the engine was turning over SUPER slow. I pulled the valve cover, and the decompression pin was in, but no spring. Can I run the bike w/o the spring and plunger, or are they reqired? Thanks.
