How will I know when to replace the brake pads on my 400ex? I know the manual has a method, but it doesn't seem to accurate, and I never remember to check it. Will they just lose grip, or will my rotor be damaged?

Eventually, you will thrash your rotors. You need to check them just like you check everything else.

If you don't have any brake fluid leaks, and the res. is low, then your pads are worn out. Don't refill it unless you compress the piston back to the home position either.
