TRX 300 Cylinder Head Cover Leak
#1
I own a 96 TRX 300 2x4 and have been having problems with oil leaking around the cylinder head. This is the forth time since I purchased it new in 96. Had it repaird by my dealer three times only to have it start leaking again 5 to 6 months down the road. Just wondering if any of you with a TRX 300 have had this problem or if it's just a defect in mine. Or maybe my dealers machanic just ain't top notch.

I have an '88 300 2wd and a '99 300 4x4, neither have had any oil leaks. The old 2wd has a slight hint of oil around that rubber plug on the right hand side of the head, but by no means a leak. Did the dealer or mechanic say anything about the head being warped or needing to be decked? Just a possibility.

A couple of reasons the head is leaking:
1. Bad seal from the head or cover being warped. Fix: Surface both parts -- If the cap is really bowed, replace it.
2. Bolts stretched or threads stripped on head. Fix: Check torque, then ride and recheck. If the bolts have to be cinched back up, try replacing them. If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to get the problem holes heli-coiled.
3. Excessive pressure in the head caused by valve leakage. Check to see if the oil smells like gasoline, if it does, your valves may be shot, and they're allowing leakage up into the head (the bike should be smoking like a big dog if this is the problem). Fix: New valves and a valve grind.
Have you asked the mechanic what he did to "fix" the problem, and why it keeps returning?

P.S. E-mail your responses to me -- Thanks!

The dealer never mentioned anything about the head being warped, but I did find out what they used to reseal it. They used somthing that I would not have used and that is" LOCK-TITE". I always thought lock-tite was to prevent nuts and bolts from coming loose. Never heard tell of resealing a motor with it. I think this may be where my problem lies!
