Default 2001 350es shifting problem

yesterday my 350 refused to shift this has probably happened twice since new, I tried rocking it which usually helps but not this time, used emergency shifter to get it down from 4 to neutral. problem didn't come back after that but im worried about getting out and having this problem. I wasn't smart enough to put shift tool away and lost it in the snow somewhere.

The problem can be anything in the system, faulty shift motor, angle sensor, or shift buttons being the most common. If it is a one off fault, get yourself a 12mm ring spanner and put that in the toolbox, you can "hand change" using that if you get problems again.
