This is something that my racing buddies and I have been talking about for quite some time now. It seems to us that a larger oil cooler on a 400EX would really help to keep the heat down - especially on modded bikes and for those who run long hare scramble or GNCC races.

Just looking up under the hood there should be plenty of room for at least a double-sized radiator and you could possibly even still use the stock lines.

I know there is a larger oil tank available but I feel you would get much more heat reduction from increasing the size of the radiator.

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas or knowledge of anybody doing something like this?

Regards,

Dennis

I have thought about the same thing. Maybe an automobile tranny cooler? Could also try an oil cooler from a street bike. They should be much larger. If I figure something out I will post it.

Did you happen to go to Loretta's this past weekend? That track was Rough!

i think you could also get a heater core from a car, i think you would be able to get one small enough to not have to modify it,

Pingry makes a larger tank, and you can get automatic tranny fluid coolers, and regular automotive oil cooler from either jegs (jegs.com i think) and summit (summitracing.com)
Both should work, you'll have to measure first so you get one that fits.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I guess I'm just going to have to dig in and see if I can't build one myself.

Paulrn, yeah, I was at Loretta's - kind of. I unfortunately spent the night before the race getting crap-a$$ drunk and got virtually no sleep - so I didn't exactly set the woods on fire. I pulled off after two laps and a couple of dry-heaves.

If I can manage to get in some traning time this week, I may hit the next race in Kentucky. I refuse to go to another race as unprepared as I was for Loretta's.

Later,

Dennis
