98 TRX 450ES/FOURTRAX/FOREMAN ES and whatever other useless designations they have to confuse you.....
Is there a way to test the ECU other than to go thru the process of elimination??

No, and on the 450ES there is a CDI and and two ECUs. One is for the 4WD system, the other ECU is for the ES system and on later models it has a self diagnosis system which shows up as Morse blinks of the gear indicator. 4WD faults come up as the 4WD light blinking.
The 420 ECU controls everything, and also has a self diagnosis system, Gear indicator blinks for gearshift problems EFI warning light for engine management problems and power steering warning light for that, (I think that power steering, if fitted, may be a separate ECU)
