2016 Honda 420 pulse coils
#1
I had a weird coincidence last week, two identical, manual shift 420s came in with pulse coil failure. In 17 years of fixing Hondas I've never had a failed pulse coil. Had them on Yams and Suzukis but never a Honda. First one would run fine until warm, then stop until it cooled again. The second wouldn't run at all, and the pulse coil shows open circuit when tested. As Honda don't sell them, I took used coils off scrap alternators and soldered them on (never throw anything away) so it didn't cost anything in parts, but with having to remove the whole rear end, it does take time. Both bikes had done roughly 2500 hours, so I am wondering if Honda got a bad batch of pulse coils, which are now failing, like the Lambda sensors, (known fault) which has also failed on one of these bikes.
