I am a very novice mechanic and this is the first thing i have done mechanically. I planned on rejetting the carb so i took off all the plastic and the tank. But... the screws holding on the top "plate" and the float bowl (i think)(the thing on the bottom) are so tight that i just strip the hole that you put the screwdriver in. I don't have a drill bit that would fit them and i have no other ideas. So will i just have to take it to the dealer? Do they have a special tool? The quad doesn't even have two tanks of gas through it yet, so would that make a difference? Sorry for the long post, all suggestions appreciated.

 

Welcome to the club. If you do your own service something like this is bound to happen. I actually did the exact same thing the other day. You need to buy some drill bits for drilling through steel and an extractor set. This "should" do the trick. For me, I drilled my bolt, put in the extractor....then boom the extractor broke off in the bolt. You can not drill through an extractor very easily. I loosened the other 3 bolts, then I took a dremel tool and cut off half the head of the stripped bolt. This let it get loose. Then I used plyers to unscrew what was left.

If you are going to try to do this yourslef, be very caryfull drilling into the bolt.

 

You need to get some screw extractors and can of never-sieze. I have yet to work on any part of my quads that have screws where I have not stripped out the heads of atleast one screw. I don't understand why they use such low quality fastners.

 

One thing to make sure is that the screw head is clean and the proper sized screw driver is used. If the screw still strips (as it has for me) then I just grab the Robogrip (or vise grip) pliers.

I grab the edge of the screw and just turn. Usually the screw will break loose. Regular pliers will not work. You need something that will have extra force to clamp down on the screw.

Might want to try this before drilling.
