420 Power steering ECUs
#1
Current model 420s seem to have an electronics problem in that the power steering ECUs go bad. I have just had one in and it is the third we have had with the same ECU fault, code 18 (internal ECU fault). Trouble is the ECUs are extremely expensive in the UK, over £600 ($800). Our local main dealer has even taken to removing the column and replacing it with the non power steering type, on bikes they get in with the fault. We can't try a reset, as only main dealers have the diagnostic computer to do one. On old model 420s you could stick a screwdriver under the lock stops and turn to full lock to do a reset, but this model doesn't have lock stops on the column. No cures that I can find for this, other than a new ECU, just hope someone either starts reconditioning ECUs or the Chinese come up with cheap replacements.

Haven't attached a picture. Tried an ECU from another bike and it worked, so told the customer it is either a new ECU or get used to heavy steering. He chose the latter. Had another in early January, this time half a dozen fault codes, including the dreaded 18, again swapped ECUs and fault gone. This customer opted for a new ECU. It has to be "initialised" by a dealer with diagnostic computer, so is just about the only fault we can't fix.
