Okay guys, please help me with this one.

Got a good deal on a '92 TRX300 (2WD) that I will give to my father-in-law who loves to hunt and who recently lost a lung to cancer.
The quad is in great condition with one exception. The previous owner let the rear hubs work loose. Because the rear axles splines appear fine, it would appear the hubs are made of softer material in order to save the axle.

Am I correct in this reasoning or have I failed to detect a damaged axle? The axle splines appear clean and flat (not worn down towards the end of the axle).

It also appears that Honda makes three different sizes of hubs. I intend to replace these with salvage hubs if possible. Comments on replacement hubs would also be much appreciated.

Thanks.

David

I noticed the same thing on my '88, had it for about two years before I noticed it. I was riding behind the wife and saw the wheels wobbling. I pulled the hubs and found the same thing you did, good axle splines but worn hub splines. Since the wife doesn't put many miles on it, I decided to reinstall them, and tighten the nut as much as I could. It appears that has solved the problem, at least for now. My guess was that with time, the hub just worked a little loose, and allowed a little play between it and the nut, then it just got worse until it got noticed. I'm not sure about the different sizes of hubs thought, someone like ATV Salvage could probably help you out there.

Thanks Guys. Good news to start the weekend.
I tightened the hub nuts with an impact wrench and as you commented Ben, the hubs are now firm to the axle. Also got the name of a local motorcycle and ATV salvage yard and will check on the cist of used hubs.

Oh and yes, I was sure to lubricate the axle and nut with waterproof grease before tightening everything down.

Ride safe.
