I have an 01 recon. It has less than 100 miles on it and I noticed the valves last week started to make a slight ticking noise. So I brought it to a motorcycle shop today to have them adjusted. The guy told me that one of them was set at .001 and the other was .004. So he adj. both of them to .005 (this is factory spec.) So I just picked it up and now it sounds 3 times worse. Can any body let me know what is going on? I dont want to drive it till I get a second opinion on it.Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also A friend of mine told me using 10w30 would quiet them down. Has any one tried this. PLEASE HELP.

Thanks,Hennyhog

Well the valves are supposed to be adjusted after the first 100 (I think) hours of operation and then every 500 or annually, but they shoudn't be louder after they are adjusted, they should actually be more quiet. I think that your mechanic probably screwed something up. As far as switching to a different oil goes, that may help quiet it down a little, but it shouldn't be necessary. I would take it to a different dealer.

The honda spec I seen in the official service manual I have was for .006 (on the current 329 motor)on both valves, however it came set tighter at .004"(probably to make it quieter for test drives). The .006 setting allows for valve ticking but certainly not loud tapping or rattling. I'd have someone reset your valves, OR, take off the side covers, gas tank parts, and the valve cover, get yourself a feeler gauge, set the engine at TDC on compressionand and adjust em... a service manual might help. Lastly don't just adjust the rocker on the valve stem! That's an absolute garranteed way to cook the valves and head within a few hours ( when the engine warms up the pushrods expand a bit allowing massive leakage problems around the valves.)

First off the first 10 hours of operation or 100 miles is when the valves need ajusting and the oil must be changed. The valves on mine were off a couple thousanths and made a ticking noise, but after being ajusted it ran fine, the only other thing that would do it is low oil, cause i ran mine with low oil and it knocked a little.
