will turning out the pilot screw on my 400ex do the same thing as going to a 40 pilot? I heard that a big thing to do on a stock 400ex is to bump the pilot(slow) jet one size, and it will have slightly better bottom end and start easier. before I mess around with the pilot screw(underneath the carb close to the engine) I thought I would see what you guys know about this. thanks

Turning out the pilot screw adjustment will richen up the pilot circuit, but I think it's more of a fine tune adjustment for just that circuit. What I did when my machine was stock was to go to a 40 pilot jet, which if nothing else helped with cold starting--can't say if it helped the bottom end...if it did it wasn't much.

I recently jumped up to a bigger pilot #42 and I didnt notice if it helped performance, but it made staring easier.

Thanks guys. First I'll try to turn out the pilot screw, and then maybe try a bigger pilot. In the summer I always have to use choke, and the winter is a nightmare to start the thing. Good to hear that a bigger pilot works.
