I would go for the 250ex. Its based on the Recon only with minor improvements. Bigger carb, valve improvements, oil cooler. All these items will be put on the 2002 Recon. The 250ex even weighs less than the Recon, 40-50 pounds I think. Going by my 325hrs on my Recon you will get one nice machine. I can't beleive how much power they can get out of 229cc. My Recon is a quick and agile performer on the woods trails we have. I put the optional trailor hitch on mine that will fit 250ex too and pull a small trailor around on our property and that sure comes in handy.

Believe me I have rode the 250EX and theres not a thing wrong with it except the suspension is'nt all that great and it it bottoms out at about 4ft into the air and its a little under powered and its very bad top heavy.HOPE I HELPED YOU OUT SOME!

don't listen to this guy. every1 says 250 and their unbiased then this guy comes and has a lakota so he thinks that his is the best. dont' listen to him. the 250 has MUCH better handling, and is a lot more fun to ride. a lakota is good for just putzin around trails and stuff but a 250 can tear around or putz if you want to. plus its a lot lighter and better for jumping.

I have the 250 Recon from which the 250EX is based. So I can give a honest assessment. The rider on that lakota better not be no beginner even with me on the Recon. If he is, he's my lunch ticket. The 250 EX is about 50 pounds lighter than the Recon. There nothing wrong with the lakota as a machine to ride and have some fun on but facts are facts and the 250EX is more sport than the Lakota will ever be. If it would go on a diet an loose about 90 pounds then the ballgame becomes more even. Sport=250EX / somefun filled days=Lakota. Chet
