Tried just about everything; 250X still wont fire............
#1
Howdie all,
I've got a pal who purchased a really nice 250X friday for $500. Anyway to the problem......
The guy he bought the bike from had the "honda shop" put in a new 3rd and 4th gear, new shifter forks, new valves and springs, freshly bored .60 over, new sprockets, chain, and a new cam chain in.
The quad would'nt fire b/f taken to the dealer and will not fire now. The guy selling the quad said that he had enough of it nickel and diming him. He bought a new KDX dirtbike.
My pal figured he could figure it out, but he could'nt.
He's got 3 other "FULL" 250x parts bikes. The problem is that the quad will turn over just fine and acts like it wants to fire. He's tried 3 different stators and 3 different CDI's. He has yet to try a different coil? He's kept fresh plugs in as well and all it want's to do is "act"!
Unless all the stators and cdi's are bad, what could the prob be????
Thanks for the time,
EC

could possible be...
bad gas: drain the tank and flush out the tank and lines with new gas, and put new gas in.
bad spark plug: said you already tried it...take it out and have a friend kick the starter and you hold the end of the plug up against the motor and watch for a spark...carefull for you not to touch something metal = slight electrical shock!!!...check for compression too while the plug is out.
Valves: your valves or timing might need adjusted...more than likely the valves need adjusted. i used to have a moto 4 80cc that did the same thing, had the valves adjusted, fired right up.
also like Killer250r said, have a friend tow you around and once he gets goin about midrange in 3rd gear, put your bike in 2nd gear...and hold in the clutch, sit back on the seat, hold on, and pop the clutch.
more than likely, i put my bet on it being the valves needing adjusted.
let us know what happens

I would say it was the valve adjustment. I had a tractor(I know its not he same) that would do the same thing. I could pull it up and down the road with the clutch in, and i would let it out, and it would turn over, and run, just as long as it was being pulled. If I let off, it would die. I pulled it back to the shop, tore the valve cover off, and DUH, forgot to set them. Get a valve spacer and ask your honda shop what the gap is. This will more than likely fix it!

Since they had that tranny apart, they probably weren't carefully installing the reverse trigger wire. It is located on the lower right side of the engine, under the black sheet metal plate. Take the plate of and make sure the teminal isn't touching the engine case, and with the cover still removed, try to start it. Make sure it isn't flooded out first. If it fires, the wire was grounded out against the plate, if not, remove the terminals from the sending unit, tape them up so they can't contact ground, and try it again. If it starts this time, the sending unit is bad and I have one I can send you. If is STILL won't start, trace the 2 white wires back to the CDI to check for grounding. If this doesn't cure it, e-mail me at Sandric@go.com for more ideas.
Hope this helps,
