My 400EX has a blown head gasket and its going to be in the shop for about 2 weeks!!! I hate that. Im lucky because the 6 month warranty is going to be up in 6 Days. I caught it just in time. There going to fix it under warranty with no charge. They said if I would have waited past the warranty time that it would cost $600-$700 to get fixed. He said that this was the first 400EX that has had a blown head gasket. Has anybody else have this happen before on a 400EX???

Jeffman,

I would definitely find yourself a new dealer. As diehard rider said, the head gasket is part number 12251-HN1-003 and is $11.93 from servicehonda. If they quoted you $600-$700 to only replace a head gasket I would call Honda directly and report this to them. Just offering my opinion.

Are you sure it didn't blow one of those inner case gaskets where you have to split the cases or something because I didn't even pay that much for a new crank, rod and piston and labor on the quadsport. So i definetly know that somethings up with your dealer.

$600 to put a new head gasket in?!?!?! Geez that are rapeing you at that price. Heck I put my frends engine back together on his polaris for him so he wouldn't have to take it to the shop and I only charged him a steak dinner!! It was good steak too in case you were wondering. Thats a rip off if you ask me. If I installed that for somebody I'd only charge them $10 an hour and it'd even out to an hours worth of work. Then again being an uncertified backyard mechanic at 16 years of age $10 is really good.
300EXter the torque is probly somewhere around 27lbs of torque. Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure it's around there. It was that much on my X anyway.
