Ok i just bought a uni air filter for my 2001 300ex. The label on it says for 93 -2000 or sumthin like that but that shouldnt matter. What my problem is, is that i need to know if the uni just goes in by itself, or do i have to put that stock metal air cleaner into the uni first? The metal air cleaner doesn't seem to fit. Also it tells me to oil before i use it, does that mean i need to oil the filter? and it says to wipe off the oil around the upper lip where it goes onto the air box. Duz that really need to be done? Please help me out here.

This info is not for sure. But, I wouldn't worry about the label stating 93-2000. Yes, oil the filter. It help trap really small particles, making the filter even more effective. Yes, wipe off the upper lip so it is free of oil. Having oil on the lip will decrease the likelyhood of the filter staying attached to the air box.

As far as the metal air cleaner, I am not sure. I would think the metal part keep the filter from collapsing. I am not sure.

Good Luck

I'm not familiar with the 300ex but can give advice from other UNI experiences.
1. The filter must be oiled. Uni filter oil may be the best but WD40 or another light spray type oil can be used.

2. The filter needs some type of support to keep it from collapsing. It may come with a spring inside. I had to modify the factory metal cage to get the UNI to fit my R.

3. The reason they tell you to wipe the filter lip is to prevent the filter from slipping off. Make sure you clean both the filter lip and airbox. Do not over tighten the hose clamp. Give a light tug on the filter to make sure it won't slip off. I always check the filter after 5-10 minutes to make sure it's staying in place. My cousin had a filter slip off and it caused his engine to seize.

I'm sure some guys with 300ex's will give you some model specific answers.

Im not sure about the metal air cleaner but i think that the uni filter goes on there by its self. And the filter should have came with some oil to put on it. If it did not come with it then you can get it from Dennis Kirk or a different atv supplier. Yes you do need to wipe it off the top so that it will not slip(blow)off.

Ps.Make sure you dont ride it without the oil that is what stops the dirt.

And make sure the filter don't fall off in the middle of the dunes. Just ask RelicRacer all about it. He'll tell you everything you want to know.

I have a Uni and what everyone else says is correct. You don't need to put the metal cage back into the Uni, it already comes with a spring inside to keep it from collapsing.

Hey man did that uni increase any horsepower or seem to make any changes with your 300ex? How often do you oil your filter?
Thanks

I noticed better throttle response and maybe a little bit more power over the whole powerband, but mainly it's just better throttle response. I ride without an airbox lid and on a very dusty MX track, so after every other ride I usually wash and clean my airfilter just to be safe, but I usually put in about 5 hours per ride, so it's about every 10 hrs that I clean it. You don't have to do it nearly this often, but I just like to be safe. Also, increase your main jet 2 sizes, with more air going in, you need more fuel flow also.

Yeah I had a little accident out at the dunes. I thought the filter would stay on without a clamp(but i was wrong) I get home to see how dirty my air filter got and it was just alying in the air box not connected to the air box mount. So i had to take it apart and clean it with carborator cleaner. No i have a clamp and it is on securly.
