Hi guys. My dad has gave me his Honda 1987 250r to me since he can no longer wants to ride it. It has been garage kept for years and years and is like brand new (needs new plastic though). What do you think I should do to get it started. anything special I should do? The throttle seems like its stuck. Mabey gas has got all dryed up and guey or something inside the carb ??. Im 16 now have some exsperance with quads none with manual trannys though. Will probbly ride it in mostly in So cal dunes if I can get it sorted. Its 100% stock. I thought Id ask you guys before i started messing with it.

Thanks guys if you can give any information what so ever!

Take the gas tank off, pour all the old premixed gas out. Then get a bottle of rubbing alcohol, and dump it in there. Turn the gas off so it wont come out, and slosh it around in the tank. This will get all the old gas out. Take the carbuerator off, disect it, clean everything you can, run some alcohol through it too. Get some good gas (93octane), mix it with good oil. Also, you will need to drain the radiator, and hope the anti-freeze didnt eat any aluminum up. Change your tranmission oil(Order some Bel-Ray 85W or something). Make sure ALL the gas is out of the system. Then clean your carb. One more thing, prime your motor. You might try to pour a little oil down the spark plug hole just to get the crank bearings lubricated. Then put some mixed gas in it. Not much, just a little. This will get your motor going when you kick it. If you dont prime the engine before you try to turn it over, you will scar the cylinder/piston because it is dry. When you do all of this, kick it over. I'm sure your dad knows how since it was his. 2-strokes are tempermental about their choke buttons, so it might take you a while to get the hang of cranking it. Good luck.

I must say U are a lucky lucky guy.

I have an 86r and U will soon find out why every pro racer uses or has used one.

Basicly lonestar banshee covered everything.U might not be able to get the carb completly clean.JUst get it as clean as possible.Make sure U get the slide on the throttle cable back in their right.Make sure it slides up and down and is not just stuck at the top.

I hope U get her running!

The octane level depends on how much compression you are running. If it is a basically stock motor, premium(93 or above) octane gas will do fine.

I get my race gas at the local bike shop. Its pretty expensive here, about 5.25 a gallon. But it does alot for throttle response, and I like the smell.
Later,
