I'm 14(will be 15 soon) and this winter mark Baldwin from Baldwin motersports is doing my motor work (because he live 5 min away). Any way my dad spends 6 grand on my bike but I have to do the mods. Being my age I cannot legally work just for my parents so I decided I want to put a 416 in it instead of a 440.Untill I can get some cash flow I want to know if I can get by with just having a 416 and a silencer. Eventually I will have a 440 and an after market cam, carb all of that fun stuff but not until I can work. So would this work? I easily out grew the slow revving 400,even with 18in tires and changing my gear ratio so don't ask why I want this done at my age.
Your help will be appreciated,
Thanks Ben#16

You will find that some 416 kits for the 400ex will make the quad just a fast as a 440 kit will. Mark is a very good engine builder and he will do a very good job. It all depends on what other work that you have done with it and what is your riding style.

that was a dumb reply .....no 416 will even come close to keeping up with a 440 ...and if you think it will come race mine ...and I weigh 275 ......

tprender..I'm with you. I've raced a stock bore 10.8:1, mildly cammed and ported EX and he was right with my 440 in a drag race at St. Joe. The guy did weigh 80 or so lbs lighter than me.

biggy....Do you have a 440 or a 450? You must have a pretty fast 440/450 to brag like that.

You need to put a cam and some kind of exhaust silencer for it to work good. There is nothing wrong with the stock carb to begin with. Just make sure that it is jetted correct. If you are running the stock exhaust the 400 will not run to it's full power. Listen to Mark he knows what he is doing. Don't belive everything that you read in the mags, some of it look's and sound good but it does not help much for the cost.

many 250'r

Im with tprender also,
Dont worry bout gettin a 440, keep the 416 and get a cam, exhaust and maybe bore your carb! It'll be faster than the 440 and cheaper too

Thanks for your help on that.I'm going over to baldwins after my bro gets off of work tomarrow and am going to talk to him about it(also buy a few new things that broke on my bike.)Now i have some new questions.I want a sparks but in real life i can't afford it so will just a supertrapp work to give it a little more of a big bike sound and inprove the performance enough with just having a silencer? Also i need to know what is the best/cheepest cam to get?I don't want to full out mx race since i hurt myself to badly doing that but i am going to woods race so i need to know what cam to get that would work best with these mods.

Thanks, Ben#16
