What gearing for modified 400EX at Glamis?
#1
I'm taking my 400EX to Glamis for the first time on Thanksgiving and I'm wondering what gearing you all recommend. My mods are White Bros filter, S-bend silencer
(18 discs), with a 165 main. I'm using 20x11x10 Sand Sharks.
How will it do on Olds Hill? I've been to Glamis many times just not with the EX. Thank's in advance.

Stick with the stock gearing. I have a few buddies with EX's similar to yours and the stock gearing is fine. The 400 does quite well at the dunes, you just are not going to win many races up Olds or Comp.
We will be staying in the flats for Turkey day holiday. Where are you camping, maybe we can hook up and throw some sand and drink a few brewskies.

Well normally I'd say hooking up would be great, but this time out I'm going with a BIG (about 30) group of friends, family, and co-workers. Most of which have never been to the dunes. So I think I'll be pretty tapped for time. Thank's for the offer though. Any idea what gear your buddies EX's are pulling up Olds hill? I'm hoping that it will pull 3rd all the way up.

third gear sounds about right, although you will be eating a lot of sand unless you are racing other EX's. For me, the hill is a place to meet, watch, rest, etc. It gets boring riding up and down the hill and there is always someone faster.
We are going to the dunes several times this year, so if you want to go on an "off" weekend we will probably be going. If you see a BIG orange wagoneer with no roof, a full roll cage and a bobbed back end, that is us, cruise up and say hey.

Yamahagye is right...
My EX is fairly modified, enough so to take piped Raptors in a drag - I run 14/38 gearing in the sand and 15/38 in the trail (getting ready to go to 15/36).
Even with everything I've done (87mm 10.8:1 lightened JE piston, XR cam, FCR39mm carb, head porting, Sparks full exhaust, modified airbox, etc...), I still feel stock - 15/38 works Ok in the sand but, the gears are a little too wide and 5th is a tad too tall to pull with authority. I am much happier with 14/38 when I ride out in the sand.
A piped and jetted 400EX would have a very serious disadvantage against my bike and would likely not pull 16/38 gearing well at all in the sand for general riding, yet alone 16/36. (this gearing may work for flat 300 yard sand drags, where you want wide gearing and are not concerned about how it pulls hills & top gear)
