Im planning on buying a 400ex on the 20th of this month. Before I do though, is it really the best quad to run on trails? What other sport ATV's are reliable like the 400ex?

I own both a Raptor and two 400exs. The stock 400ex is much easier to ride in tight trails than a stock Raptor. It slides better, corners better, and it is easier to control the power. The stock Honda suspension is better than the stock Yamaha suspension. Obviously if you plan on making lots of mods then alot of these factors aren't important. Flat out though, the Raptor is a more thrilling ride due to the power even with its handling quirks (can be overcome with additional $$$). In terms of reliability and maintenance, the 400ex wins again. If you bought a Raptor, you would need to also plan on replacing the 2 front tires immediately since they are 2-ply and you will rupture the sidewalls trail riding.

So far my tires are holding out OK. Have approx 65 hours on them. I have my fingers crossed. I hit lots of tree roots. The tire GOD has been with me. Chet

the 400 is a great trail quad stock ! probly hands down the best . if you dont need reverse . try installing 6ply razors for the trail they steer much better that stock and never seem to go flat!!!!

yea... I figured the 400 would be the best choice but before I spend $5k, I want to be positive. I know there are other quads that are faster but Im looking for handeling, tork, and reliability. Speed is good and all but Im not racing anyone... yet! Thanks!

all i can say is I love my 400. Dont know if its the best, even though i have rode many quads, but its an awesome trail quad. Was just riding some pretty crazy trails in W Virginia and she ran good and strong = me having a blast (except for my buddy wrecking his and breaking 3 bones).

Also 400 parts are cheap to replace.

Although many love their DS650s, it is not for trail riding...yea this will hurt some feelings but it is true. Way to wide to be competitive with a 400ex in the woods.
