Try this one on for size instead of just one ex why not
two modles on the same frame.
One chain drive like we have now and one with a drive system like the
250 ex auto clutch shaft drive and reverse maybe with larger tires and
lower gear ratio = ground clearance at the same time keeping the great
suspenion and disk brakes. not a mud machine but would be a blast
on thetrails. Just a thought what do you think?

No offense, but I'd bet that the majority of trail riders would rather have the clutch and chain drive system than an auto clutch and shaft. I do see your point with the 22 inchers and reverse, but it seems to me that the xr650 motor would be a much better choice for the trails. The 450 is much more of a high strung race motor, and requires much more maintaince than your typical four stroke.

I personaly think that the XR650 motor is a joke on a quad frame or on a motocross track for that matter. For desert racing and trail use it can't be beat. Reason being is they are getting so little horsepower out of 650cc's. This in turn gives you great reliability that you want in the desert and on trails. The CRF however is making almost just as much horsepower with 200cc's less to boot. I think a XR650 or XR500 quad would be perfect for the trails but make the CRF for the track. Then you'll please most everbody. I'd give them the same body's same everything except for the carbs and engine. Just my .02.

Ok heres my i dea , have two models one a exr (race) and one an ext (trail) put the 450 in both of them have them both have good chassis but the trail version has electric start and revers while the other one has kick start higher compression , racing pipes and lower profile tires. oh yeah and race cut plastic.

I think a 450ext auto clutch shaftdrive would be a turd. I think a manuak clutch is way better for everything except hauling heavy loads(maybe) If they made a manual clutchy 4X4 I would buy one. What I would want most but will NEVER happen is a 4X4 with switchable 2 and 4 wheel peal will a clutch, 60HP and handles and jumps as good as my R. Sure it will NEVER happen but I will keep dreaming !
