? for Rubicon owners
#6
I have a new Rubicon aand I havn't ridden it that much but I would think twice about putting on a larger tire because low range does'nt seem that low even with the stock tires. I could see changing tires and staying with the same size.

If you get a high performance kit from HighLifter.com it will pull 28" tires with no problem.

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT install 28 inch tires of any kind and a lift kit on your Rubicon. Installing a lift kit along with 28 inch tires forces the CV joints to run at a very accute angle. The front CV joints were not designed to run at such an angle and within a few weeks you will ruin the joints. Don't believe me? I have a friend who installed 28 inch Mudzillas along with a lift kit (fender clearance) and initially he was very happy with them. Within three weeks he ripped a CV boot and wanted it replaced under warranty. The dealer had no problem with this (although technically a lift kit SHOULD void the warranty) and promptly removed the CV joint. When it came time to remove the large c-clip that holds the inner shaft to the joint, it became obvious that the clip could not be removed. Because the joint had run at such an accute angle, the inner shaft had rubbed all along the joint and "riveted" the joint over the clip. Since there was no way to remove the clip, there was no way to replace the boot and the whole shaft had to be replaced. Now since the ATV was new the dealer replaced the complete shaft under warranty but the customer was advised that any future occurances would not be covered. So if you decide to install Mudzillas and a lift kit, be warned that after having the first shaft replaced for free, you will be forced to shell out over 150$ for a new shaft every time a simple boot needs replacing. My opinion, install 26 inch tires that do not require a lift kit and be happy with that. Hope to have helped.

Thanks for the info bigred85. Do you know where he got his lft kit from? From what I understand high lifter lift kits are tested ensuring that they maintain proper angles for safe operation. Im not saying they wont make your cv's fail but..... About the tires I actually hink im going to go wih the 27" bi/tri-claw set up. They are a little lighter than the Mudzillas.

First, off to run 28s you dont even need a lift. I have had 28 inch outlaws on mine since I got the quad in June 2000. All you need is the fender kit. If you choose to run a lift note that it will cause increased wear on the CVs. This is known with ALL lifts and is a risk you assume by running it. Lifts are meant to be on hardcore mudders not quads that get 1000 miles a year on them. With the performance kit you will have no problems turning those tires.
