Maybe something is wrong with my 400 then. I have an '88 250r (stock porting) with a pipe. When I ride the 250r, then switch to the 400, you can tell it's not even close. My 250r will lift the front tires in 4th gear without using the clutch, my 400 would be lucky to do that in 2nd gear. I will dig into it and see what's up. Any ideas?

Either 1: There IS something wrong with your 400,

or 2: The 88's are considerably faster than the 86's.

Why dont you get another good rider and RACE the two machines.

Like I said, When I raced my 01' 400EX against a piped 86' 250R with "motoX gearing" as he put it, my 400 would jump out in front if him and he would not catch and pass me untill he was screaming in his 5th or 6th gear. His short gearing might have affected the race too, he might have been winding each gear very quickly without as much gain in speed in each gear.

Point is, the 400EX's are not slow. They are no Banshee, but they are not slow.

well the way i see it. i was watching the last GNCC race this year and they asked bill balance why he was racing a 4 stroke? he said in the next 2 years there will be no more 2 strokes aloud in gncc so he was trying to get used to it. thats why i sold my R because we all know this day is coming

I figured it out. It was jetted too lean. I thought that I had jetted up enough for cold weather, but I was still about 4 sizes too lean. Now it is better. I will still keep my 250r though. I do think the 250r is still faster and more fun to ride(just my opinion). Thanks for the replies.
