jwp, the Es system is great once you get use to it, a couple of rides and it'll be no problem. I like it alot but the wife doesn't, to each his own. It doesn't allow for pop the clutch wheeling take-offs because of the 3000 rpm rev limter from neutral, but if you high rev it in first and pop it to second, it'll get off the ground no problem. I have 1200 miles on mine and the only problem I had was last week (20 degrees in mich) rode for 25 miles, no problems just like normal, washed it after driving on the freeway for 60 miles went to unload it, shifted to reverse no problem , down the ramp, went to shift to first, NOTHING, did wash the quad really good though got water in the ES shifter possibly and froze, took out the old foot shifter just to see if it worked and sure enough, 1st,2nd,... worked the gears alittle let it warm up and presto, back in business, working just fine again. The shifting tool works well but you wouldn't catch me riding it like that...
I personally do alot of mud/water riding even in the winter (though normally frozen, lol) and would not like to dump the quad in a creek and FREEZE up the ES system, this is the first time not working, sank it many times in the summer, never a problem, but the winter ??? be careful if you ride frozen rivers that is. I love the high performance a clutch system offers, but the ES system is REALLY NICE. I can also climb on my quad(es) shift and never get wet or muddy...... but that's ALL of the FUN isn't it....
trx350dude, shiftplate re-call ???? when ??? what serial #'s, I have a 2001 2X4 ES, any info....

My little bro just bought a Rancher ES. I've ridden it numerous times. He hasn't had ANY problems with the shifting. We went together when he got it. I was ready to talk him in to a S model. But you get more than just the electric shifting for the 200-300 dollars more for the ES. You get full floorboards, you get the digital dash with speed, hour/trip meter and odometer. So I think it's worth it, even though every time I get on the thing, I'm tapping my toe to downshift. HA! Takes some getting used to hitting it with your thumb.

I bought my ES in October 2000. Some pro's and con's...
Pro's:
Faster to shift for less momentum loss going up hill.
Faster to shift for quicker acceleration.
Full floorboards.
Speadometer cluster.
Water crossings...I change gears and keep my feet dry.
Con's:
If I come to a stop and have not downshifted it tends to stick alittle while downshifting through multiple gears.
Twice it has stopped working...I turned the key off, then on and it was fine.
Also...It does take some getting used to. Once you get the hang of it I'm convinced you'll love it. Downshifting while going up hills has been a huge unexpected advantage.
If I could only get Honda to give it selectable on the fly 4wd, disk brakes, independent rear suspension and brake lights I would have the perfect quad!
Buy the ES, you won't be sorry!
