Clutch is not that hard to get used to, you just have to remember not to pop it out to fast( learned that first hand on a motorcycle). Poped the clutch out to fast, did this masive wheelie, fell off the back, and grinded my head agianst the back tire, it sucked, but it was my first time. Gotta love those helmets. The 400ex was one of the first clutch quads i used. Its not that hard unless you are used to the manual, and never used a clutch before.

All of you saying a 400EX is to much to learn on the first Clutched quad I rode was a Raptor Stalled once. use your common sence and you will be fine. The honda clutch's and engines and bulletproof. (Just don't try shooting them )

<< my two cents, i ride a two stroke honda 250r. i'll use the clutch to get started and when i'm putting around but when i'm riding hard and racing i'll let off the gas for a second and shift up with out using the clutch. important note!!! let off the gas for a second, or you'll fry your clutch and replace a few gears. i've ridden for three years on my factory honda clutches (which are the best) and not had a problem. i do not recommend this type of shifting unless you are an experienced rider. just use your clutch and you'll be fine. airtime >>

You would think if this guy really raced he would know to use the clutch at all times. Hope you got alot of money on your hands, b/c your going to be replacing a clutch and prolly some gears pretty soon! I accidently pulled up the gear shifter once and it sounded awful! Sounded like it slammed in gear. And one more thing, why do you have to be "experienced" to shift gears w/o the clutch?!?!?! That dont make no sence to me.....

jeffman, if you were an experienced rider you would know what i am talking about. if you let off the gas for a moment you can shift gears just as smoothly as using the clutch. no banging gears. but if you do not know how to do it (as you obviously don't) then stick with the clutch. i would recommend using the clutch as i said before, but it is not necessary to use it. what does racing have to do with being able shift gears. oh yeah, i forgot, you have to be a pro-rider in the ama before you know anything. airtime

I agree 100% with airtime.

I Don't use the clutch. Haven't used a clutch, Don't plan to use the clutch, and have never tore out a clutch.

All you guys have your own opinions on this, as you are entitled to, but don't get on here saying that people are stupid not to use it.

Because of those who have been in the industry in ways that you haven't
know better.

please use your clutch.your machine has a clutch for a reason. once you ride the bike you will realize that it is much easier to get on that four wheeler and ride than to worry yourself to death about the clutch. think about it, everybody that rides a sport quad uses a clutch, so it cain't be that hard. if jeffman can do it, anybody can. i was just saying that you do not have to always use the clutch to shift. airtime

Is the clutch on the left or right handle-bar? When you go to shift gears you pull in the clutch but do you have to let go of the accelerator as well?
