My IMS 440 kit was 300$. (not including the machine work to fit the new sleeve, about 100$)
Yes the Raptor was stock. BUT, like I said in another post of mine, my clutch is in serious need of replacement and is slipping badly during power shifts. Also, my air filter had not been cleaned in a while, and when I let my UNI filter get dirty and then clean it, I see a very noticable difference. With my clutch in proper order, and a super clean filter, I might have been able to pull a half a bike length on him.

OH also, After the race, I later realized that I was running low octane fuel (from a friends 5 gal tank) and the motor was pinging like crazy (high compression with low octane is bad news).

Ill race him again and post results.

I've owned both the 300 & the 400EX (still have the 300). If you are outrunning your buddies on 400EX's with your 300, it's because your friends are lousy riders. The 400EX is faster in EVERY catagory except reverse. Posts to the contrary are so self-serving it's rediculous. You 300EXers who insist on claiming you routinely beat 400EX's are insulting the intelligence of those who own, or have ridden both machines.

The 300s smaller size gives it the edge in VERY tight trails. The 400 has the edge EVERYWHERE else, and in every other way you can think of (power, suspension, etc.). I would only pick a 300 as my primary bike if I were on the small side (or if I was 12 yrs old!).

Those who think that the 300EX is for smaller riders ha ha i laugh in your face. Those who wrip and laugh at the 300 are jackass's. If the 300EX was such a bad and small quad why do many many adults own them. The 300EX or any honda quad should not be ripped on unless you are not a red rider any quad is a good quad thats my sayin. oh and by the way i never said the 300 was better then the 400 so cram it.

okay, this is gonna be long, but i think you'll get my point by the time you read it...

i had a 300ex. it kept up with all stock 400ex's, and beat most of them, now if the 400 had a pipe, filter, and jets, then it was a very close race, i'm talkin extremely close, pretty much dead even. all these people say that if i say the 300ex is as good as the 400ex with a grand of extras, i'm stupid and insultin thier intelegance. well, anyone that makes that very comment cant be right in the head. true, it's not possible to have the same great frame geometry as the 400ex, but with the 400ex a-arms, shocks, and swingarm, the 300ex handles just as well, this is from experience, so dont bash me about that! can a 300ex keep up with a 400ex with 1000 dollars in extras, YES! you can put a FST 330 kit in one for about $300, get used 400ex a-arms for around 50, used swingarm for 100, good filter, 30 bucks, get your carb bored at a local machine shop, bout 50 bucks, a hotter plug and jets, lookin at about 15 bucks, while the head is off for the bore job, go ahead and port it out, this can be done at a local machine shop for about 50 bucks, or if you're able, you can do it yourself. good pipe, get a used one for 100 bucks. so far there's about 700 bucks int his quad. still got 300 dollars for 400ex shocks, which will leave you still more money to spend, or you could buy some used works shocks with that much money. etheir way, a 300ex with a grand of work WILL outrun a 400ex in most any situation, if you build it right, and use your head in the proccess, i've already done this, i know how it goes. but a good point was made earlier in this thread, the guy with the 400ex can go buy himself a 440 kit, and you're in the hole again, but that guy on the 400 will have a lot more money in his quad than you!, just my .02.

Hondaguy, the 300 is a good machine.
Dont get all upset about it, man.

You posted this thread, so deal with the responses with a mature attitude.
Dont get all fussy when people tell it the way it is.

ps. Who cares anyway, if you love your quad, thats all that matters.

<< The 400 is not slow you can bore it out put power kits and exausts in it and make it run with the top quads but the 400 is now in an older lower class just like the rest of the sport hondas,Its time for honda to make a new sport quad or we'll be stuck behind the pack for a long time >>

Sure you can get the 400 bored out and everything but than you can do the same to all the other bigger quads and they would just burn you again. If your gonna compare, you should compare stock vs. stock. I'm not bashing the Honda's, I used to own a 300ex and I LOVED it on the trails... but then I started racing. I wish my cannondale would corner like a 400ex (even though it's probably just the stock holeshots that make the cannondale tippy) I could go a lot faster in the corners on my friends 400ex than I could my Dale, and I can corner my Dale faster than I could my 300ex, so that just tells you that the 300 won't handle like the 400 w/ only $1000.

Oh and sick0hillclimber, the Raptor doesn't put out 50 hp... it doesn't even get 40 hp w/ a pipe alone.

warpig, yea, you gotta weld the linkage mounts, and if i remember right, you either have to put in spacers, or move the mounts for the swingarm, but either way, if you're handy with a welder, it's no trouble at all.
