Actually, in stock form, the 400ex isn't much higher compression than most 4-stroke quad's. The main reason they are hard to start is because they are jetted lean on the idle circuit for emisions. Go richer on the pilot jet, and prime the engine with the carb's excelerator pump (pump the throttle to the stop 4-5 times) and it will fire right up.
