What is the right compression on a 250R, that will vary. It depends on your elevation, whether you are doing it on a cold motor, or warm. On a stock motor, your compression should be in the range of 160 - 180. I don't know of any good way of getting all the metal shavings out unless you split the cases and disassemble everything.

I had the same problem on mine. I made the mistake of letting someone else work on my carb. The float wasn't adjusted and I tried everything to start it, but nothing. I tore the carb apart myself this time and adjusted the float level and it started second kick. Hold the throtlle wide open and kick it over a few times, then pull the plug. Is it wet or dry? Mine came out dry, so no fuel was getting in the cylinder vecause the float level. Hope I helped, and good luck.

It seems to be getting fuel, the plug has gas on it and when I removed the pipe I poured fuel out of it. I thought maybe the compression might be low, but I just put the piston in last year, and and the only place I rode it was about 5 or 6 weekends at silver lake, could the rings be bad all ready? and how do you like the esr ignition? did it give any power improvement like they say? I replaced the cdi on my 400ex and it made a big difference. guess I will take the cylinder off and check out the piston and ring. Thanks for all the replys, I need to get her running, silver opens april first.

It's really hard to say whether the ESR ignition helped a great deal because I made a whole bunch of changes at the same time. Went from stock setup to ESR ignition, ESR310 kit with 9 port, ESR pipe and silencer, new crank, new 38MM carb, new clutch basket, etc., it runs like a raped ape!!

Make sure your floats are set at the correct height and that your breather tubes off the carb don't have any kinks in them. Also did you take apart your pilot jet? If not clean it, it will make a world of difference. Also check the mixture screw. Normaly they sit somewhere around 1 1/2 turns out. I'd play with that a little bit also.

I got to looking at the throttal valve(slide), and it is bent on the intake side, where the valve has a slot on the bottom were the air screw comes through. It is bent about 2mm inward almost the length of the slot, could this cause it not to start, what do you think?
