Jet changes for altitude?

I'm ready to buy a Rancher ES for hunting. (First ATV) I live in San Diego but go twice a year to Utah to hunt. Sea level at home vs. 8000 to 10000 ft where I hunt.
The dealer in Utah mentioned re-jetting for me when I am going above 7000 ft and again before I go home. This seems to be a pain for each trip.
Is it really needed?
How bad would performance be if I didn't do it?
Is possible damage a factor, or just performance?
If mechanically inclined with tools...can I do it myself?
What should I expect the procedure to cost if I have it done each time?

SoCal, the performance will be pretty bad. I went from sea level to 6000 feet with my Warrior some years ago and it ran really bad. 8 to 10 K feet is gonna be much worse. Jetting is pretty easy. Somebody with a Rancher should be able to tell you what you need to do. The jet is in the carb. You take it out and put a different size in. depending on the carb design it can take 5 minutes or maybe up to an hour...

Thanks, WyoDuner
I hope somebody with a Rancher at elevation can say what jet (and even better how easy it is to change??).
If your in Cheyenne, aren't you at 5 or 6K? How much higher do you go before considering a change?
