My husband has a Raptor and I love it.It is a 2002 and he just put a Yoshi pipe on it.(He has a hard time keeping me off of it and it halls butt) It takes a while to get used to compared to my Warrior, (lots more power and you sit higher) but it is great.
Our buddy has one with a swingarm and its fine to putt around on, but hard to get the front end off the ground.I've never ridden an 400ex but probably will next week.
I personally would go with the Raptor, you dont have to worry on any hill that you wont make it up. And the ride is great! Also, from a womens standpoint the Raptor is just so much sexier than the toy looking 400ex (no offense ex owners).
As far as price, just look around for a used one with all the goodies on it already, than it will be about the same price as a new 400ex. We bought ours new, but got a great price because it was in January.

That is the biggest load of dogsh!t I ever heard. There is no way in hell below, that you beat modded 400EX's with paddle tires,and you were stock with stock tires!! Cut out the bullsh!t some of us know better. Simple as it is if you want to keep it for a while without having to take it in and out of the shop get the 400EX. It has PLENTY of power and torque. Its simply the most balanced well-rounded sport quad available. And for the Raptor looking sexier then the 400EX.....it's not going to look very sexy when your raptor is being towed back to camp by a 400EX.
