Just picked up 02 Rancher ES 4WD. Run it through the gears all is well, shift into 5th and trans is quite whinny. I was told this is normal, is it.

Yes, that is normal. I have an 01 Rancher, 5th gear is a bit more audible, I assume because it is a longer gear, meant for the widest of speed ranges as opposed to the other gearing. Never had a probelem with it. No worries.

Both mine whine in 4th and 5th gears. I think it is normal. Havn't had a single problem!

Thanks, bought it without ever riding one. Rode a 2wd a year ago but never a 4WD. It's mostly for my daughters. It it treats us half as well as our Rubicon has we will be happy campers.

Thanks for the replys, no worries now.

The rancher does make some gearbox sound, I'd almost say mine has gotten quieter since I got it, but I've probably just gotten used to it.
