On a 2 stroke, boring your cylinder and putting in a new piston and rings. I suggest you buy a Clymer manual for the 250R when you get it, it's been a lifesaver and somewhere in there, tells you how a 2 stroke motor works.

Where can I buy a clymers manual? would a honda dealership have em?

Yes a Honda dealer will have them, I recently bought one off Ebay brand new and still was $15 cheaper including shipping, than my local Honda dealer. But first, get the bike. Do you know anyone who knows about quads or has some mechanical knowledge, I would suggest you get ahold of them and ask if they will help you with your quad when you get it.

I'm not really being mean here "King" but a lot of questions you're asking can be answered only after you actually own one. Fuel/oil mix? Who knows? I mean, you could buy one that has 230lbs of compression and needs 110 octane and has been riden only with Klotz at 32:1. Or, you could get one that has 150 lbs of compression, and the doofus was running 87 octane with Neo mixed at 100:1. It's hard to answer some questions without you actually having the machine and trying to get it to run.

Now, what made you decide you wanted a Honda 250R?

I have 2, and I think they're the best quad ever made, but I rode almost everything else out there before I decided.

They do take some effort, not a lot, but some to keep them up. Good ones for a good price are also hard to find, and the price, depending on where you live, can be astronomical for a POS.

Um then when I get it,I guess I should just ask the owner how much gas and oil 2 mix in?

How do I tell its compression numbers?

I like to slightly overfill my tranny. Keep a bit more oil on those expensive transmission gears.

You can get a little compression tester at a local dealer or I think NAPA or Advanced might have them. You just stick the tester in the spark plug hole and kick it over. Get your self a Ratio Rite, your dealer should have them, makes mixing a breeze. Just don't sit anything heavy on them, "crunch". Had my Ratio Rite in the back of the truck, tool box slid over and hit it.

Seriously, buy the manual that retro (Eric) has and start reading it. You will need the info in there.

When you finally buy one, yeah, ask them what fuel/oil combo they have been running. Unless it's really and exotic setup, you can stay with what they have. Sometimes an R will respond favorably to a change, sometimes not. When I bought my first R, the owner ran pump 91 octane with Maxima at 32:1 and it smoked excessively. After a few trips, I changed to Golden Spectro with pump gas at 50:1. Ran better. Blew up a few trips after that. Since several rebuilds, I have run Amsoil 2000 at 50:1 with 91 octane pump gas. Same as the rest of my group (at least 7 more Rs). It's handy to be using the same as we can help each other out.
