What do most of you all use to clean your carbs. I am installing a larger main jet in my 96 Honda 300ex and I figured since I have the carb off, I would give it a cleaning. Can I just use regular automotive carb cleaner? I was just planning on giving it a couple of good shots in the ports and such.

Killer205R is correct, any old spray type carb cleaner will work, just be sure you wear safety glasses,as the recipient of a few blasts in the eye,which burns like a mother, I can tell you that the carb cleaner tends to come flying out of little parts that are always aimed right at your face!!![img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif[/img][img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif[/img]

 

Do you take the carb fully apart, or just clean certain areas? Just wondering.

What works for me is to take the carb bowl off,and put the spray can straw in every hole and give it a good shot until it looks like it flows clearly.Then I hold the carb body upside down and give all the jet holes and other orafices a good cleaning,get the straw as far into the holes as possible,and give it a couple of seconds,or until you see a good spray come out of another spot.Then tip it back up,let any left over spray run out,put the bowl back on,and you should be ready to put it back on. Just remember the goggles!! this stuff will burn for almost an hour if it gets into the ol' eyeball,take it from a man who knows,especially if you have contacts in, they soak it right up and will keep burning you until taken out.

 

A friend of mine uses an air compressor as well....any advantage to that?

Whenever I have quick acces to an Air Compressor I use it. I usually take all the hose off, let my cab soak in gas overnight, take it out and blow all the holes out with an Air Compressor. Works for me.

 

No, the carb is in one piece. I only opened it up to insatll a new jet and adjust the clip on the needle.
