To increase low end torque on a EX or Z 400, everyone talks exhaust, intake, carb mods. Does it work like this? Aren't you just increasing the hp and getting a small % increase in torque, a torque\hp curve that is already pre-set by valve timeing and such.
Does what I am asking make sence, if you have a motor set to preform at mid-high range, anything you do externally to increase power is goeing to go in that direction and an extremely small percentage will be seen at low end, will it not?
Just wanting to know the facts and what to expect...
Thanks guyes.

yes that is true. But if you want really high torquing % increase the compression Ratio and that should increase it.But the thing is that is horsepower. So when you increase compression you increase torque by a little and you increase horsepower by a lot.Why do you want higher torque anyway?wouldnt the higher horses do the same?(just a thought)

On my 400, I lost low end (what the 400 is famous for!!) when I increased my airflow (headers, pipe, and particularly a K&N). Mid and high end did increase though. This isn't a trail bike, so it wasn't a disaster, but I WOULD LIKE TO GET IT BACK!! Later I put on an Edelbrock carb, and mid to high end power is FURIOUS, but low end still hasn't returned. I think an increase in compression is the answer, but I just don't have time to mess with it right now.
If you are a trail rider, I would recommend increasing airflow only with great caution!! If this was a trail bike, I might just be happy with the stock setup.

My aplication is for trail rideing. I now have a 300EX with a little lower gear than factory and it is very responsive off the bottom. I got to ride a new 400EX, but with factory gearing and it seemed real slugish of the bottom. Maybe I am not giveing it a fair chance since I haven't rode it with a lower gear. Perhaps I was expecting to much from only 100cc increase! I guess I whant something that isn't offered, I want something that is low geared with plenty of muscle for real rough terrain, somthin that will haul @ss, handle and jump like a sport quad should. Not asking for much am I?(HaHa!)
Anyway, thanks for the posts, I just wanted to know what these mods really offered.
Thanks

gtv , actualluy you should try a hond arancher.Im not sure if its what your looking for but you should really look into it.They`re fast enough and the perfect trail mechine that can haul *ss.Dont go for a bigger ute. because the speed is decreased.(in my opinion)

Maybe in about 24 more years when I am a senior citizen, I might consider a sport utility, and at that it would probably be a 650Prairie. It halls **** for a s\u.
Thanks for the sugestion but the rancher is the slowest honda 4by I have rode!!!
Later guyes...

yeah your right but i dont really drag the bikes up to the top speed anyway so its useless for me to talk about speed.

If I was going to attempt to increase the torque of a given motor I would look at a different cam profile $ for $ this will give you the torque you so desire. There are many manufactures who specalize in this aspect of engine performance, give em a call and see what they can offer you, good luck!
