Questions about '02 250EX
#1
hi. i own a '02 250EX (bought 11/01) with a few light modifications listed below. this is my first quad and i was just wondering.....
1.what do i have to do to maintain the shaft's performance?
2.how often should i change the oil?
3.is there any grease fittings on the 250? (my dealer told me there was none)
4.how many years/hours of riding before a top-end rebuild is needed?
5.with the mods i have, would 87-89 octane gasoline (i.e. regular unleaded)be alright?
6. when doing a jump, what do you do to get the rear wheels hit the ground first (most of the time my landings consist of either hitting all 4 wheels simultaneously or the front landing first)
7. how much of a difference in speed and acceleration would i get if i slapped on, say, 20 inch Maxxis Razr rear tires over the stock balloon knobby ?
any feedback would be great

We have an '01 250EX and here's what we do:
1.Check the oil level often and change it every year.
2.Change the oil after about 20 hours ride time. Oil is pretty cheap!
3.No fittings to grease.
4.If you keep the oil changed and the valves adjusted there's no reason it shouldn't last many, many years. C'mon man, it's a Honda!
5.We run 93 octane in ours. It's only a few cents more to run the good stuff.
6.Try a quick burst of throttle just before you get airborne. You are standing up and leaning back right?
7.Go for the 20" rears! We have them on ours and I feel it's the best 'bang for the buck' that you can do on a 250EX. It not only improves acceleration but handling as well with only minor top speed loss.
Here's a tip: When you go to change the oil there's a drain plug on the back of the motor near the driveshaft. It makes a lot less of a mess than the one underneath the motor.
Hope this helps,

thanx moto.one more question: will i lose top speed if i go any smaller than the stock tire? at the place i ride in NJ the majority of the riders on the ATV Track use higher-displacement hondas, banshees, and raptors and if you dont ride at a similiar pace as them, you'll be buried in roost. the stock balloons dont handle well and i dont feel comfortable going over the occasional rut on them. i would like to keep as much top-end power and speed as possible while getting a gain in acceleration.by the way, do you have a aftermarket pipe on your 250ex? i just got a Pro Circuit T-4 exhaust yesterday and was wondering where the bulk of the power goes (i.e low mid or top-end)

Ryanh Not to change subject but how do you like your mods the pro circut and jet kit did you make any noticable gain(honestly) I have same machine and was thinking of doing same mods

speedy,
Normally, i would tell you how the mods are on my bike, but i just got the EX back yesterday (10-hour service)and the mods were actually a surprise from my dad (i got really good grades in school for the 2nd semester). while all of the mods are already installed, i have not yet had the chance to drive over to the local ORV park and test the parts. however, i did get to gas the EX in neutral and i can tell you this: with the T-4 exhaust from pro circuit, the putt-putt sound that comes out of the stock exhaust is gone. with the new exhaust, you now get much better flow (i.e. less back pressure) and the engine sounds stronger.from WHAT I CAN TELL SO FAR(this might change after i go riding next) the new exhaust doesnt sound much louder than the old one. the T-4 is tunable, so in case you ride in a sound-restrictive area (i.e. a quad can only emit a certain level of noise before it is deemed illegal), you can change the end caps to make less noise. the EX is without a doubt a quiet machine and with a new Exhaust, restictions on the airflow are lessened, if not eliminated. I LOVE the sound of the air coming out of the new exhaust and i think your son should love it as well, should you go out and buy the T-4.
About the K&N Jet Kit- i cant really tell you much about the kit because 1) i havent tested it ,2) i had professionals install it for me and 3)i have very little knowledge about jetting, the contents of the K&N, because i am relatively new to the sport of ATVing but judging by the mods you have on your raptor, i'm sure you have sufficient knowledge about doing that stuff.
Sorry for not being able to help you out more. i will get back to you with more details as soon as i go riding (probably sometime this week).

ryanh250ex,
In my experience with putting the 20"s on the rear it doesn't seem to have changed the top speed much at all. It pulls high gear easier and just revs a little more. Acceleration is greatly improved.
Ours has the stock pipe with a custom end cap and that really helped the power everywhere.

the only thing that i have found with the 20's on back is that you have to shift sooner, and my wife hits the rev limiter alot now. as soon as i can find a new cdi with a higher limiter i'll buy it. other than that the tires, exhaust and filter/jet kit made a huge improvement

Be careful on the 250EX. If you crash and happen to mess up both a-arms. You will have a big dent in your wallet. My friend rear-ended this chicks rancher es bent both a-arms really bad. It cost him around $2000 to get it fixed.
So,dont go flying into a corner and forget to brake and go SMACK into a tree. Seen it happen. Ain't pretty.
