The 300EX is a real nice machine. I have a '98 and I really like it. It has good suspension, plush at all speeds (especially higher speeds), decent power, great cornering and handling, turns easily, pops wheelies without the rider even trying, and it just fun to ride.

I had a 93 300 ex for a couple of years...
I loved this quad...It's no racer..but it has good usable power...

The only problems I had was a bent axel...But I was really jumping it.. The only other gripe I have is the lack of grease zerks...So you have have to keep everything clean. I had somw problems with loose A-arm bushings,,But thats it...
good luck.

The 300ex is light, fun, and plenty quick enough for most trail riding. It easily climbs hills, goes through mud and water, and is great for almost any time of riding imaginable.

2 of the guys I ride with sometimes have 300EXs. They are great quads. With the release of the 400EX everyone would have you believe the 300 is a real dog, but they run pretty good. Though I don't own one myself one thing that bothers me is the dumb way you put it in reverse.

I own a 00' 300EX.
The bad: reverse selection is a joke, choke adjustment is in a bad spot(on the carb), not setup for racing.
The good: electric start, easy maintance, honda reliability.

The 300 is a great sport quad. In stock form is handles great, has plenty of power and is a solid little machine.
It has tons of aftermarket parts to make it compete on any scale.

I have a 98 300ex and the only problem that i have had is axle bearings and as long as you replace them right when something is worng it is no problem!!

DISADVANTAGES- choke and reverse in stupied spots, but try finding another GOOD sport quad with reverse!

ADVANTAGES- HONDA, fast with just a few mods, good suspention, fun as hell, quality, looks cool, resonnably priced, all around good quad.

reverse selection is less than desirable, but still usable if necessary.

I think the reverse procedure and choke location suck also, but I never have a problem accessing either of them. I'm so used to where the choke is on my '98 Honda 300EX that all I do is reach down and flip it on, no need to look or anything. I can even do it easily with big winter gloves on. The reverse procedure I wish didn't require a hand to leave the handlebars, but it gets the job done. I know of a fix for both of these problems. For the choke access, a dealer close to me sells kits and installs them on 300EX's. It moves the choke to a **** up on the handlebars. If you look at the Recon's design, I think that's where they got it from. For the reverse procedure, my brother had a modified one on his '93 300EX. When he got it used, it had the reverse lever and linkage off, and in it's place was a shift lever on the shaft for reverse. So basically there was 2 shift levers there, but the other one didn't really get in the way. For anyone that rides in the rocks, I wouldn't recommend it, but it seemed to work pretty good, especially since you didn't have to take your hands off the handlebars to get in reverse. All you had to do is push the red lever in, pull the clutch, and push down on the shift lever with your foot!
