Piston ring questions. HELP!
#1
I just got a new Weisco piston. I took out the old piston and the rings were broken and really tore up. I took the new piston out of the box and seen that there is 5 rings. But there is only three slots for the rings to go into. Are the other 2 skinny ones for spacers or something? Anybody that has installed and aftermarket piston, your help is appreciated. Thanks.

You're rebuilding a 4 stroke right? Ok the two really thick rings go in the 2 slots towards the top of the piston. There's another ring thats wavy and 2 other rings that are smaller then the other two. You put the wavy ring in the bottom slot then you take the 2 smaller rings and put one on top of the wavy ring and one on bottom. These 3 rings all fit in the bottom slot.

I could not tell the difference between the 2 top rings. The only diference is one is a bronze color and the other is gray. It seemed like when I put the rings on, that they each had their own size slot. The Gray ring would not fit in the second spot, but the bronze one did. So I just figured thats the way it goes.

The chrome (gray) ring always goes in the top slot. Look at the rings near the gap and you might find a letter, number, or other marking on one side. The side with the marking goes upward. If there isn't any marking, you can put it on either way. You won't need a ring compressor on an atv engine. The bottom of the cylinder is tapered and you can squeeze the rings together with your hand and carefully slide the cylinder down on the piston.
The thin rings have to go in after the wavy ring. This set of rings control oil. The middle ring controls oil and blowby from the top compression ring.
Remember to make sure both of the wrist pin clips are installed and snapped firmly in place, or your pin can slide against the cylinder wall.
