I certainly hope so too! It wasn't a stock bike...i'd have to be smoking somethin to brag that I beat a stock Z with my bike! All I was saying is when you put a little money into a bike you'd be suprised what it can do!

i have a hard time believing that you can beat modified banshee's and raptors a piped banshee should beat a 440ex
but like you said a quad is only as good as the rider

If you have a hard time believing it ask Jeffinrivercity or demonds or for that matter anyone who was at DS Days in Sand Mountain.Or you can ask AZSand he raced it for me since im out for awhile recovering from surgery. AZSand is on now.

I don't make my decision strictly on a drag race and I have ridden both a Z and my EX on varying terrains. Woods, wide open and tight and dunes even recently. I also rode a Raptor. I loved the power of a Raptor, I would not however trade my EX for a Raptor, the Z is another story. If anyone is completely unbiased, that would have to admit the Z feels like an EX in the handling department and is flat out faster. And revs like there's no tomorrow. Extremely smooth, I don't know if it's because of the liquid cooling, but it's so smooth, you'd almost swear there was more than one cylinder down there.

As far as drag racing goes, anyone who raced stock vs. stock EX vs. Z, the Z would win hands down every time. (Given same; amount of traction and rider skill) The #1 mod you can put on a quad is rider, so better riders can make up for their quad if underpowered.

I love my EX, great quad, might be able to get some good deals on them right now too, but that's mainly because everyone wants to get a Z!! I know I wouldn't mind having one!! HA!

About the only knock I've heard on the Z's is the rear brake rotor. It's solid and starts to squeal after a while. However, it's the exact same as a 400EX, replace it with an EX rotor (with holes) problem solved.

Get the Z, it's worth it at MSRP $5699.00

Also, Cannondale in my opinion is in another class. If money were no object, I'd have a Blaze in my shed.

man oh man,,,400ex vs z400..here we go again,,,
will the z400 beat a ex on a drag ,,sure by maybe 2 atv lengths, big deal.
the ex has more bottem end grunt.the z400 has more top end,,,revs like crazy.
i was at a mx track last weekend..both my buddies ride z400.they took my ex for a ride.they both liked it,the bottem end power is alot better.i took there z4o0 for a ride, i have too admit,i like my ex better.the z400 is too snappy, no bottem end power.if all three of us rode together on the mx track or in the bush, no big diff.Only in an open race would the z400 beat the ex,and of course reverse.the z is awesome no doubt , but give me a break , its not light years ahead of the ex, it barely beats it in the open runs.

If honda added liquid cooling, reverse, higher compression piston maybe 11.5:1, and maybe titanium valves it would kick major ***.

Midlife,
Did the Z's also have 1 tooth lower on the cs sprocket and aftermarket exhaust, jetted, and higher flow filter?

Good point stebob. I have modded my stock pipe and regeared my Z and there is way more than any 2 quad lenghts difference. And as for the bottom end bit I keep hearing that but after I opened my stock pipe up a bunch and got it broken in more my biggest lowend problem is keeping the frontend on the ground in both 1st and second gear and it will come up in 3rd if you let it. The 400EX is a great quad and if modded will hang with any of the new stuff out there except in an all out dragrace and I have seen several do well at that also. But if your looking at buying a new quad the Z400 is a much better deal and can be modded to make upper 40s in horsepower without stroking it and spending loads of money.
