I was wondering what that oil plug on the side of the engine was for..i know its obviously for oil, but what kind and how do i know how much to put in? it looks like it leads to the gear box compartment since it is right on it. I wish i new how to service my 250 but i have no book for it and the guy on e-bay did not send me the one that i payed for.

p.s.and how do i drain the existing oil in the compartment? or do i really have to..

thanks

You unscrew check oil bolt and if oil comes out your full(level ground). And if it is not full add oil till oil comes out the hole. To change your oil you remove the the bolt at the bottom of the engine case, you will find an access hole in your skid plate, I think it's a 15mm bolt. I usually warm up the engine first so all the oil flows out better. After all the oil drains out, put the bolt back in, add new oil till the oil comes out of the check oil level hole. I can't remember exactly how much it takes. You add the oil in that twist on oil adder hole, not in the check oil level hole.( sorry about all the technical terms)

600cc 0r .63 qt. is what is required on a trans oil change. I just measure and pour it in without taking out the oil level bolt. That bolt strips very easy and if you don't pour the oil in slow you will get a false reading or oil exiting from that hole before the proper amount is added. The drain bolt is 17mm hex (stock) You need to get a manual, Clymer is pretty good and not to pricey.

Yes there's only weight HP oil, you can also use 10w/40 with the API rating SE or SF. This will be on the bottle, don't use the energy conserving type as you may have clutch slippage.

I live in south San Diego, right by the border. You ever ride out by the 905. You are not supposed to ride there, but every weekend at least 50 people show-up from all over San Diego. I just realized this ,but are we talking about an 85-86 or is yours older? Did I miss that in the post?

Yes, I am riding there today with friends! and my 250 is an 83-84 model (air cooled) I have never gone to this "905" spot; my fiends are taking me there today though. are you going there any time soon? Is this a good spot for all types of riding?

p/s/ i am going to take off for the 905 in like 4 hours (after work)
