KNOWSALOT- the shop manual that i have for my fourwheeler says that the difference between those starters is that one is a "short shaft starter" and the other is a "long shaft starter". is that what you are talking about?

i bought a reduction gear for it about 4 months ago, b/c thats what i thought was wrong with it, but it just makes a grinding noise when i hit the starter. the guy i bought the quad from showed me the old reduction gear and it was ate up looking. he said that was all it needed, but when i replaced it it didnt work.

when we looked at it, the starting shaft (i'm no mechanic so i'm going to use laymens terms, lol) doesnt touch all the way. so, when i hit the starter, the shaft just spins barely touching the gear. just thought this info might help. thanks.

That's why you have to have the right reduction gear for the starter you are using.

Tell your local dealer which starter it is that you are using so that he can get the right reduction gear set for you. It consists of two gears.

This will fix it.

KNOWSALOT- thanks for all the help. okay, i know i'm probably getting on your nerves asking all these questions, but i have one more. how much of a performance improvement would it make to put a new exhaust on my fourwheeler? the only kind i can find for it is COBRA. are cobra exhausts as bad as everybody says? thanks

You would be wasting your money on a performance exhaust for these models. Like the TRX300, noticable improvments powerwise aren't to be found without tearing into the engine......and THEN adding filter and exhaust.

The Cobra's are good pipes but not the best, but like you said, sometimes it doesn't matter if that's all thats available.
