I have use the throw away ones.. Depending on what kind of riding you do, you can get the regular ones with a cardboard covering. Or I use the Water proof ones. For one they are waterproof and two then have a plastic cover, a littel more indestructable. The bad thing is you can not zoom in with these cameras. I am going to use a older 35mm the next time. I would like the zoom option..

If you love to take pictures, and love to ride ATVs,now you can do both.
For years I have wanted to take my camera with me on my ATV, but was afraid of screwing it up by the harsh bouncing of the trails.
I went to Wal-Mart, found a small cooler type soft sided lunch box with wide carry straps. Also look for the ones with the plastic one piece liner for the added support. Next I lined the inside with simi soft styrofoam. Then I got some ordinary bubble wrap. I wrap the camera and Lenses in the bubble wrap. Then stuff extra bubble wrap in the voids so the camera and lenses are snug. zip it shut and it's safe and secure. almost water proof.
I place it on my front rack with the zipper part facing me. I can just lean up, unzip it and take the pictures.

as for the type of camera I use... Nikon with a 70~300mm zoom lens... I am very satisfied with the close ups I can get and stop action shots.
check out my Briefcase url below. Note, that alot of pic quality is lost thru scanning and transfering to the internet.

I use a Canon Rebel with a LowePro Omni Sport bag
that straps on as a fanny pack or can be carried by a shoulder strap when you aren't riding. It hampers riding a little and try to avoid mud when possible. Kinda depends on how much you want to spend and how good a pics you want. They make pretty durable Camera bags, shop around on the Web.

At the Silver Lake Dunes I saw 2 guys with video cameras duct taped to their helmets. I'm NOT kidding !

I have two digital, one is a cheap $99.00 vivitar that i just broke at a party and the other is a Epson 850Z. they work great as i can have over 100 pictures downloaded into my computer withen 2 minutes
The epson is pricy @ $700.00 but takes 35MM quality pictures with a zoom.

If your shutter speed is 1/1000 of a second or faster you could take pictures while riding with no blurring. I myself have a special bracket mounted to my helmet which holds a 3.5 oz color video camera, the recorder is in my backpack.
