I have a 1998 Honda recon and I want to know which tires are better for cross-country riding the
Kenda Viper's or the Itp blackwater and am also looking at the Maxxis all-track or surtrack.
please tell me which one of these tires is the best.

I would say the blackwaters.

the Vipers are an excellent all-around tire for the Recon, but i am not too sure of their flat protection. Both the Sur trak and All Trak's are also excellent tires with good resistence to flats. They are also both a flatter profile tire than the viper. the All trak is a better cornering tire due to it's non-directional *****, but the Sur trak would be a better choice for a muddier course. As for the blackwaters, while they are an excellent tire in the larger sizes (25 inch and up) I have had trouble and heard of others having trouble with them being axle bearing eaters... the tire carcass is so stiff in the smaller sizes that they are awfully tough on axle bearings. And that also produces a harsher ride-- not exactly the hot setup for x-country racing.

Please allow me to throw another into the mix, and it's a cheaper alternative. It will require you changing rims, but I'd did it anyway with my Recon.

Carlisle TrailWolf is a great all around tire for the Recon. Mine did wonderful on it. It's very aggressive in both dirt and even mud, and it is built on the Blackwater base so it's a very durable 4 ply harder to puncture tire. best of all it's very affordable.

At least check them out, before you make your descision.

On A Suzuki 250 quad runner a long time ago I ran Kenda Vipers on the back in the desert & found them very satisfactory & long wearing. Also a little less expensive than some.
I run Bear Claws now on my KQ and Bandits on my Warrior but I'm not sure your ride would handle either of those too well with its level of power.

Why would the Recon be unable to handle the Bandits? Too much weight? Inquiring minds would like to know.
