common sense to know when to rebuild would be to kick over the engine and check for compression loss.

Put the quad up on a stand and spin the front tires and look and feel for slop or roughness, same with rear axle although you almost have to take the chain off for this. Wiggle tires, also front end, check for bushings being worn out on the a-arms. Take plastic off and check all over the frame for cracks, I mean all over!! Ask alot of questions, how long ago was the top end rebuilt, what was rebuild, what about bottom end? Has it been rebuilt and ask exactly everything that was done, did they swap out just bearings and seals or did they swap out the entire crank. What crank did they use, Honda-best, or another brand. How does the clutch engage, does it stick, is it smooth, how long ago was the clutch replaced, if so, with what. Does it have a new clutch basket, if so, which brand? Does it have the '89 clutch upgrade done? Ask if the swingarm pivot bolt bearings have been replaced recently, how about the bearings in the bearing carrier, how old are they? Does it have an aftermarket bearing carrier? Has the frame been welded/repaired anywhere? What riding did the previous owner do, mx, trails, recreation, etc., mx is very hard on the stock R frame and swingarm.

Hope this helps!! BTW, I have a rolling chassis I'm getting ready to sell, pm me if you might be interested, I'm in Tulsa.

Check to see that the wheels match. Don't laugh, friend bought one with mismatched wheels and he didn't notice.
Are the tie-rods bent, even a little? Or are they brand new? Either way, had front end slammed.
Do the wheels line up? Bent A-arms are something to look at. Handlebars bent, steering stem straight?
What condition is the plastic?
Is the whole quad there? Does it run? Well? All the gears work?
