Default Thinking of buying 400EX motor

I come across a guy trying to sell a used 2001 400EX motor the other day and I was wondering if it was worth it. I was thinking I could buy a frame and the rest of the parts to build a complete quad and maybe come out ahead. He said he'd take $500 for the motor which I thought sounded pretty cheap, but I'm not sure. I don't really know the guy either, so he might be full of it. The other thing I'm concerned about is how do I know that the motor is not hot? On the other hand, maybe I should just forget about it and just buy a complete quad. Anybody have any experience at doing this sort of thing? What does everyone suggest

That is a decent price for a 400EX motor I sold a bottom end for $600. One thing is you will not be able to buy a new frame from Honda with out the frame and motor vin #'s. If all you want to build is a basically stock 400EX then it seems to me like you could do better just buying used. If you wanted to build a full on racer then just having the motor would be a good way to start.

Jeepster: if the motor is only $500 i would consider it hot. I have attempted to buy motors but they have all gone for 1k+. Good luck.

You could look at the motor and write down the VIN number that is on the engine and take it to the Department of Motor Vehicles or to a State Trooper. I'm not sure but you may be able to go to a Honda dealer and have them do a VIN search. If it was reported stolen it should come up or at least you should be able to find out who the original owner was. I am not sure that this would work but it might be worth a try.
