Fourtrax 300 Problem

Fourtrax 300 Problem
One of my friends has a fourtrax 300. I'm not sure what year it is but it smokes really bad. Does anyone know what the problem could be? He said that the guy who owned it before him had it in a creekbed or something and got sand in the motor. I'm guessing he cleaned it out but that couldn't be the problem could it? Thanks
