Default Help - Blue Smoke

My 87 250X that I bought last month, and I thought was in good shape, is emitting blue smoke out the tailpipe when it's cold, but the blue smoke seems to fade away after warm up, and haven't really thought much about it, just chalked it up to being a 15 yr old machine. I checked the oil in it today, and it was below the MIN level, and about 3 gas tanks ago, it was right at the MAX level. Sounds like I'm burning up more oil than what I initially thought. Whats going on inside my motor? And, what is the first step in determining/solving the problem?

Thanks for any feedback!

Default Help - Blue Smoke

Thanks Smitty!

Since I don't want to tear my motor apart right now in the middle of the riding season, can I just put some 20W50 oil into it, until summer when I can take the motor apart? I'm running 10W40 HP4 right now, but I think if I ran some 20W50, I would use less oil? I ride in the So. CA. desert almost always above 60F, and run the motor hard by revving out every gear.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions?

Yea. just put some thick oil in there and have at it.

It wont hurt it at all, just make sure you keep an eye on that oil level.
You wont have any problems at all untill you let that oil level run low.........

Default Help - Blue Smoke

If your valve stem seals are bad then u can try an automotive adative such as : Rislone, or any type of high mileage seal conditioner. They should help soften up those old brittle seals and help them seal better. Since your oil system is smaller than that of a car just use a porportionate amount and not the full quart. say like one pint of conditioner to 2 quarts of oil. I would make sure you let it idle alittle longer until the blue smoke slows down before you romp on it. This may help if you want to try it until you rebuild the top end.
