That piece is a diquadrolateral electromagnafluxulator. It goes between the semicondusive spankshaft and the transversal tri-dyno brake. Whatever you do--DON'T DROP IT! You could chip the alumnatripetal pearlescent finish.

The Illustrated Parts Breakdown drawing from a Honda parts catalog, microfiche, or service manual identifies the part, the first two containg the part number also.
Sources: Honda dealerships, mail-order parts houses, junk yards (ATV "disassemblers" or "recyclers," if we must be politically correct).
Technical advice: Honda USA customer service, Torrance, CA--a really conscientious opeation trying to help.
Good luck!

I am confused. You know it is expensive at the honda dealer but you don't know what it is.
How is the dealer telling you the price with out telling you what it is?
I am sorry but it does not make sense to me.
Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

It looks like part of the starter drive commonly called a Bendix drive (I think) assembly. Did it have a gear on it and a spring loaded sliding shaft? If its not part of the drive its probably the brush holder. I can't tell because I can't see the other side.

The reason i know how much it is because i brought the piece in the honda shop and they told me it would cost about 100 dollars for a new one. They never told me what it was called.
Is there any reason that i have to put a new one in if i just use the pull start.
