Default 250r 0r 400ex?

Hello, Im hopefully going to be getting back into racing again this season, mostly hare scrambles and mx. I Have been out of the sport for the past 2 years when I sold my 86 250r. The question is about the new bike... I have 4k to spend and want to know opinions on what to buy. A freind is willing to sell me one of his R's that is completley restored to show condition with a 265 motor and works suspension otherwise all new stock parts for 4k. or should I buy a used ex and get a 440 kit which should also put me about 4k. I know my old R was a blast, I have not had a chance to ride an ex and was wondering if a 440ex and an R would be pretty much even speed and power wise. I know they are basically the same suspension geometry so that should be close.. I know the future of racing is sadly going 4 stoke so I dont know if I should just jump on board or go with the old fun 2 stroke. Thanks for any input...

Is there any case for getting the ex at all?

The speeds will be close, but that R has some suspension, which is more inportant than power. And it costs alot. You can be a little lazier of a rider on the 4 stroke, but ride harder and faster on the 250R.
The only case for the EX would be that it you don't have to mix gas ( I am reaching foe that one)?

4 strokes generally require less maintenance and put out plenty of low end torque.

problem with the 4-stokes is when they blow, they really blow. In the end they cost a fortune to fix (ive only broken one, and that was enough for us). They are really nice rides though, fairly smooth. Feel like a couch with wheels

i'd go with a 400ex. R's are very old and will require lots more maintenence. A good built 440ex is just as fast as a built 265R. Not on top end but bottom they are about the same. But the R is alot lighter, but I prefer a 4stroke.

I had a 250R and a 400EX both at the same time. Sold the 250R it was definatley the better bike...but long term the 400 was the better deal...it rides alot smoother and it doesnt require any mixing for fuel.

Get the 400EX

i just do this whole maintenence thing for 2-stokes. Honestly now. Besides mixing gas 2-strokes are VERY reliable. Keep up on the jetting and you'll be fine! You guys cant be that lazy to where mixing gas is a chore...please! Ive ran drag setups that have ran for an entire year and never break. Like i say, keep up on jetting, and keep your mixture right. Their isnt a whole lot to maintain in the first place. You have a piston and a crank...id think that is a lot more reliable then a 4-stroke which has a piston, crank, valves, timing chain, ect ect.
