Can you really even compare the 400EX to the Raptor

The raptor will waste the 400ex ina drag race. There is like a 12-15 hp difference stock (thats a lot). But put them on a motorcross track and you will be faster onb the raptor. A better comparison would be the newer Z400 v. the raptor. You still have a significant power difference int he 400, but now it si a more level field, w/ reverse, liquid cooling. I think there is no disputes that the Z400/KXF handle night and day better than a raptor, but the power is a big advantage on the Raptor.
Good Luck

The only real advantages the 400ex has right now is 1) they are CHEAP 2) TONS of mods available for it.

A well modded 400ex will hold it's own against mildly modified Raptors and Z400s - especially if you are the better rider

I have seen a number of 400exs in the $3,000 range in cycletrader.com

If you want to race MX or Harescrambles, look carefully at the used 400ex option. Otherwise, fogetaboutit.

MX

If you are buying used, I would just settle for a 2000-2001 400ex. If you are looking to buy new, it depends what you have in mind for the quad in the future and where/how you plan on riding. If you ride mostly on trails or in woods I would go for the KFX/Z400. In the woods and trails, are you really going to need all the power of the Raptor? If you ride in more open areas and/or like to really let the quad rip, or maybe you're one of those people who have to have one of the fastest quads out there, then I'd go for the Raptor.

400s are cheap.. Depends on your budget and riding preference.
